Astrology is famous among the three wings called Siddhanta Samhita and Hora. It is considered to be the main form of Veda. Subjective states in the above three wings are independent. But the remaining two are the dependent wings of the principle wing.

In the Vedas, in the Brahman-texts, in the Srauta Sutras, in the philosophy of the Mimamsa, in the Panini Sutras, and in the Puranic History, many miscellaneous topics of astrology are available from the point of view. Its independent subjects are propounded in a very ancient famous book called Lagadh Munyukya (Vedāngjyotisha).

This means that the knowledge of the time of every Yagyadi and the rituals of the householders or the duty of religious ethos is considered to be dependent on astrology itself. Due to this, in the Vedas, the divisions of the Samvatsar, Ayan, Ritu etc. and divine relationships of Nakshatras are obtained. Its special description is discussed in the Atharvaveda chronological order.

ज्योतिषशास्त्र सिद्धान्त संहिता और होरा नामक तीन स्कंधों में प्रसिद्ध है। यह वेद का प्रधान अङ्ग माना जाता है। उपर्युक्त तीनों स्कंधों में प्रतिपाद्य विषय स्वतन्त्र हैं। किन्तु सिद्धान्त स्कंध के आश्रित शेष दोनों स्कंध हैं।

वेदों में, ब्राह्मण-ग्रन्थों में, श्रौत सूत्रों में, मीमांसा आदि दर्शनों में, पाणिनि सूत्रों में और पुराण-इतिहास में प्रसंगानुसार प्रयोजनवश ज्योतिष विद्या के अनेक प्रकीर्णक विषय सूत्ररूप से उपलब्ध हैं। इसके स्वतन्त्र विषय लगध मुन्युक्त (वेदाङ्गज्योतिष) नामक अति प्राचीन प्रसिद्ध ग्रंथ में प्रतिपादित हैं।

तात्पर्य यह है कि प्रत्येक यज्ञादि और गृह्योक्त संस्कारों के अथवा धार्मिक आचारों के कर्तव्य के काल का ज्ञान ज्योतिष के ही ऊपर निर्भर माना गया है। इसी कारण वेद में काल के संवत्सर, अयन, ऋतु आदि विभाग और नक्षत्रों का दैवतक सम्बन्धादि प्राप्त होते हैं। इसका विशेष विवरण अथर्ववेद कालक्रमानुसार चर्चा है
