The process of this Hora or Jataka Shastra is pure scientific. What will be the characteristics of a person born in which ascendant, his body will be considered from which place of the horoscope, etc. have been determined in this scripture. For example, all the thoughts related to the wife of the native should be considered from the seventh house and most of the things related to the king should be considered from the tenth house. The names of all the twelve places in the Ascendant have been fixed and they are Tanu, Dhan, Sahaj, Suhrut, Sut, Ripu, Jaya, Death, Dharma, Karma, Income and Expenditure. The same is done. Sometimes predictions are also done by the horoscope. The difference between Lagna Kundali and Rashi Kundali is that in the first place in the Ascendant, the number of the Ascendant is written in the birth chart, whereas the birth sign is written in the Rashi Kundali. Rest of the things are same in both.
After Narada and Vasistha, only Parasharas have attained the rank of 'Maharishi' in the field of astrology. In this way, Maharishi Parashar is the foremost among the originators of Indian astrology. - It's unquestionable. That is why it is also said - kalau parasharah smrita. It is clear that in the present Kali Yuga, the Parasharakrit Hora Shastra is the only scripture for all. The word 'Ahoratra' denotes day and night. The word 'Hora' has been derived from the omission of the beginning and last syllables of this word, as it has also been said in the Horatihoratra Vikalp, the desired Purvaparvarnalopat.
It is not possible to say anything with certainty on which period and place of the past, which Maharishi Parashar, the founder of Brihatparasharahorashastra, decorated with his presence, but after assessing his composition and other evidences, it becomes clear that it is the name of Brihajjataka. Praneeta was the predecessor of Varahamihira. Kautilya has quoted Parashara in his Arthashastra. There is also a memory available in the name of Parashara, which is also discussed in Garuda Purana. Parashara has mentioned the names of Manu, Ushna Brihaspati etc. Parashara is also mentioned in Brihadaranyakapanishad and Taittiriyaranyaka. Yasak mentions Parashara in his Nirakta, calling him Shaktiputra. The Agnipuran clearly declares him to be the son of a father named 'Shakti'. These Parasharas are mentioned in the Mahabharata, whose son is mentioned as Vyas. Varahamihira, the author of Brihajjataka, has accepted this shaktiputra Parashara as the originator of Prakrit Horashastra.

इस होरा या जातक शास्त्र की प्रक्रिया शुद्ध वैज्ञानिक है। किस लग्न में उत्पन्न मनुष्य के क्या लक्षण होंगे, उसके शरीर का विचार कुण्डली के किस स्थान से किया जायेगा, इत्यादि का निर्धारण इस शास्त्र में किया गया है। उदाहरणार्थ जातक की पत्नी से सम्बन्धित समस्त विचार सप्तम स्थान से एवं राजा से सम्बन्ध रखने वाली अधिकांश बातों का विचार दशम स्थान से करना चाहिए। लग्नकुण्डली में होने वाले सभी बारहों स्थानों के नाम निर्धारित कर दिये गये हैं और वे हैं-तनु, धन, सहज, सुहृत्, सुत, रिपु, जाया, मृत्यु, धर्म, कर्म, आय और व्यय मनुष्य के बारे में फलादेश अधिकांशतः इस लग्नकुण्डली द्वारा ही किया जाता है। कभी-कभी राशिकुण्डली द्वारा भी फलादेश किया जाता है। लग्नकुण्डली से राशिकुण्डली में अन्तर यह है कि लग्नकुण्डली में प्रथम स्थान में जन्मकालीन लग्न को राशि का अंक लिखा जाता है, जबकि राशिकुण्डली में जन्मराशि लिखी रहती है। शेष बातें दोनों में ही समान होती हैं।
नारद और वसिष्ठ के पश्चात् फलित ज्यौतिष के क्षेत्र में 'महर्षि' का पद प्राप्त करने वाले पराशर ही हुए हैं। इस प्रकार भारतीय ज्यौतिष के प्रवर्तकों में महर्षि पराशर अग्रगण्य है. – यह निःसन्दिग्ध है। इसीलिए कहा भी गया है- कलौ पाराशरः स्मृतः । स्पष्ट है कि वर्तमान कलियुग में पराशरकृत होराशास्त्र ही सर्वोपकारक शास्त्र है। 'अहोरात्र' शब्द दिन और रात्रि का बोधक है। इसी शब्द के आदि और अन्तिम अक्षर का लोप होकर 'होरा' शब्द की उत्पत्ति हुई है, जैसा कि कहा भी गया है होरेत्यहोरात्र विकल्पमेके वाञ्छन्ति पूर्वापरवर्णलोपात् ।
बृहत्पाराशरहोराशास्त्र के प्रणेता महर्षि पराशर ने अतीत के किस कालखण्ड एवं स्थान को अपनी उपस्थिति से अलंकृत किया, इस पर निश्चितरूपेण कुछ भी कहना सम्भव नहीं है, किन्तु इनकी रचना एवं अन्य साक्ष्यों का आकलन करने पर यह तो स्पष्ट हो ही जाता है कि ये बृहज्जातक के प्रणेता वराहमिहिर के पूर्ववर्ती थे। कौटिल्य ने अपने अर्थशास्त्र में पराशर को उद्धृत किया है। पराशर के नाम से एक स्मृति भी उपलब्ध है, जिसकी चर्चा गरुडपुराण में भी मिलती है। पराशर ने मनु, उशना बृहस्पति आदि का नामोल्लेख किया है। बृहदारण्यकोपनिषद् और तैत्तिरीयारण्यक में भी पराशर का उल्लेख किया गया है। यास्क ने अपने निरक्त में पराशर का उल्लेख करते हुए इन्हें शक्तिपुत्र कहा है। अग्निपुराण इन्हें स्पष्टतः 'शक्ति' नामक पिता का पुत्र घोषित करता है। इन्हीं पराशर का उल्लेख महाभारत में किया गया है, जिनके पुत्र के रूप में व्यास का उल्लेख प्राप्त होता है। बृहज्जातक के रचयिता वराहमिहिर ने इन्हीं शक्तिपुत्र पराशर को प्रकृत होराशास्त्र का प्रवर्तक स्वीकार किया है।
