प्राचीन वैदिक काल की महान विभूतियों की प्रथम श्रेणी में थे महर्षि वाल्मीकि संस्कृत भाषा के आदि कवि एवं विश्वविख्यात हिन्दू महाकाव्य 'रामायण' के रचयिता वाल्मीकि एक महायोगी थे।
महर्षि वाल्मीकि का जन्म नागा प्रजाति में हुआ था। उनके पिता का नाम वरुण और माँ का नाम चार्षणी था। वह अपने माता-पिता की 10वीं संतान थे।
