रामायण सात काण्डों में विभक्त है जिनके नाम हैं--मालकागढ़, अयोध्याकान्ड, अरण्यकाण्ड, किष्किन्धाकांड, सुन्दरकांड, लंकाकांड और उत्तरकांड। ये सातों कांढ सम्पूर्ण राम कथा विकास में सात अलग २ अवस्थाओं के परिचायक हैं। रामचन्द्रजी के जन्म से लेकर राज्याभिषेक तक जिन सात मुख्य मुख्य भागों में कथा का विकास हुआ है उन्हीं के अनुसार कांडो का भी विभाग किया गया है। यह तो सामान्य उद्देश्य है जो प्रत्येक कथा के विकास में देखने को मिलता है। परन्तु यह बात चरावर ध्यान में रखनी चाहिए कि तुलसीदास जी उपन्यासलेखक की भाँति केवल फधारस के थानन्द से तृप्त करना ही नहीं चाहते थे, लौकिक सुख के साथ २ हमारे पारमार्थिक सुख ओर भी उनका लक्ष्य था । श्रतएव सात कांड मनुष्य के पारमार्थिक विकास की भी सात सीदियाँ हैं। बालकांद का नाम उन्होंने संतोप सम्पादन' रक्खा है और उत्तर कांड का नाम 'यविस्तहरिभक्ति-सम्पादन' है। इस श्रृंखला में सुन्दरकांड का स्थान 'विमलज्ञान सम्पादन' का है ।

यद्यपि रामचरितमानस में बालकांद, अयोध्याकांद यादि अधिक प्रसिद्ध हैं। परन्तु उपर्युक्त शृंखला पर दृष्टि डानने से मालूम होता है कि सुन्दरकांड का भी अपना अलग महत्व है। छोटा होने थोर लौकिक चरित्र तथा लौकिक चर्या की ओर अधिक असर न होने के कारण सुन्दरकांड सामान्य लोकतचि की दृष्टि से अयोध्या कांड के धरायर चाहे न हो सके, तथापि यह हम जानते हैं कि प्रायः लोग इसका श्रोत्रग्रंथ की भाँति पाठ किया करते हैं । इससे सिद्ध होता है कि एक रूप में सुन्दरकांड का महत्व दूसरे कांटों से अधिक है।

सुन्दरकांड का 'विमलज्ञानसम्पादन' नाम मिथ्या नहीं है। इसमें लौकिक चरित्रों और लौकिक कार्यों की विशेष चर्चा नहीं है, उतनी से अधिक नहीं जितनी कि भगवान् को नररूप में चित्रित करने के लिए स्वाभाविक थी। भगवान् का नरवरित्र भी यहाँ अधिक नहीं है, क्योंकि स्पष्ट नरचरित्रों से उनका इसमें कोई सम्पर्क भी नहीं होता। इसमें न तो वह निपाद से नाव पर चढ़ाने के लिए प्रार्थना करते हैं, न जङ्गलों में रहने के लिए स्थान ढूंढते फिरते हैं, न स्त्री के श्राग्रह से हिरन मारने को दौड़ जाते हैं और न फिर स्त्री के खोए जाने पर विकल विरही के रूप में विलाप करते फिरते हैं। सुन्दर काण्ड में जो उनकी सत्ता है वह सांसारिक चंचलता से परे गंभीर शान्त विकार-शून्य स्थिरता की सत्ता है जिसमें परब्रह्म का भान करना कठिन नहीं है। नररूप के लौकिक व्यवहार में भी यहां उसी स्थिरता और मर्यादा के दर्शन होते हैं। लक्ष्मण में चञ्चलता दिखाई देती है, वह कहते हैं समुद्र को सुखा दो, परन्तु सर्वज्ञ भगवान् मुस्करा कर निर्विकार भाव से केवल इतना ही उत्तर देते हैं- धीरज धरो, ऐसा ही होगा।
