ज्योतिष के क्षेत्र में भारत संसार के समस्त देशों से सदा आगे रहा है। आज, यद्यपि अन्य क्षेत्रों में भारत की गणना संसार के पिछड़े देशों में होती है, किन्तु ज्योतिष के मामले में वह पिछले सैकड़ों वर्षों से संसार के समस्त देशों का नेतृत्व करता चला आ रहा है। यह नगण्य सत्य है कि संसार के समस्त देशों का ज्योतिष ज्ञान भारत के ज्योतिष ज्ञान के सम्मुख नहीं रखता। इसके साथ ही साथ यह हमारा दुर्भाग्य है कि हमारे देश में इस विद्या की धीरे २ अवनति हो रही है ।

अवनति के दो मूल कारण हैं। पहला कारण तो यह है कि देश में ऐसा कोई विद्यालय नहीं जहाँ इसकी दीक्षा का समु चित प्रबन्ध हो । किसी भी विद्या का उत्थान जब तक सम्भव नहीं जबतक शासन उसके प्रसार और खोजका पूर्ण साधन उपलब्ध नहीं करता। देश के पाठ्यक्रम में इसका कोई महत्व नहीं अतः जिज्ञासु व्यक्ति भी इसके ज्ञान प्राप्ति के साधनों से वंचित रह जाते हैं। उनका ज्ञान अधूरा रह जाता है और शृङ्खला-बद्ध न होने के कारण उनके ज्ञान का कोई महत्व ही नहीं रहता। शासन की उपेक्षा जो सदियों से इस विद्या विशेष के साथ चली आ रही है, इसके पतन का मुख्य कारण हो गई है ।
