Introduction to Vasistha Samhita

'Vriddhavasishtha Samhita' has a prominent place in the Samhita texts. In this book, often the Samhita substances have been discussed in a proper way. This book has been composed by Maharishi Vasistha himself, so this book has a reputation as Arsha Granth. It is well known that the name of Maharishi Vasistha appears in the eightfold originators of astrology. There are (46) forty-six chapters in this book. Four of the planets from Shastra Swarupadhyay till the tenth chapter, Panchang Nirupanam from the eleventh chapter to the sixteenth chapter, Muhurta narration in Saptadashaadhyay, various charity mantras and their legislation in Ashtadasadhyay, Sankranti representation and utterance in the nineteenth chapter, Chandratara force statement in the twenty-ninth chapter Utpat Phal, Grahakuta in the twenty-third chapter, Lagna Balabal in the twenty-third chapter, from the twenty-fourth to the thirty-two, from conception to the marriage ceremony, in the thirty-third chapter, Rajabhisheka, in the thirty-fourth chapter, the discussion of horses, in the thirty-fifth chapter, Gajarishta Shanti, in the thirty-sixth chapter Eclipse peace, travel muhurta in thirty-seventh chapter, home entry in thirty-eightth chapter, architectural research in forty-ninth chapter, devpratishtha in forty-first chapter, characterization in forty-first chapter, fault-representation in forty-seventh chapter, peace legislation, blasphemy statement in thirty-three, clothing in forty-fourth, forty-fifth dress In the forty-sixth Utta Shanti, the discussion of the origin of diseases and the law of peace are found. Thus ends the book in forty-six chapters. The verses and themes used in this book are Arsha and are narrated by Maharishi Vasistha himself. There is no influence of other sages and Acharyas on this book, but almost all the Acharyas and contemporary Parashradi sages have also quoted the verses and opinions of Vasistha Rishi in their respective texts, so the antiquity of this book is self-evident.

प्रस्तुत पुस्तक वसिष्ठ संहिता का परिचय

संहिता ग्रन्थों में 'वृद्धवसिष्ठ संहिता' का प्रमुख स्थान है। इस ग्रन्थ में प्रायशः संहिता पदार्थों का सम्यग्तया विवेचन किया गया है। इस ग्रन्थ की रचना स्वयं महर्षि वसिष्ठ ने की है अतः आर्ष ग्रन्थ के रूप में इस ग्रन्थ की प्रतिष्ठा है। यह पूर्णतया सुप्रसिद्ध है कि महर्षि वसिष्ठ का नाम ज्योतिष शास्त्र के अष्टादश प्रवर्त्तकों में आता है। इस ग्रन्थ में (४६) छियालीस अध्याय हैं। अध्यायों का विभाजन एवं विषय विभाजन क्रम से सुव्यवस्थित रूप में किया गया है। संक्षेप में अध्यायों का विवरण लिखते हैं। शास्त्र स्वरूपाध्याय से दशम अध्याय पर्यन्त ग्रहों का चार, एकादश अध्याय से षोडश अध्याय पर्यन्त पञ्चांग निरूपणम्, सप्तदशाध्याय में मुहूर्त कथन, अष्टदशाध्याय में विविध दानमन्त्र और उनका विधान, उन्नीसवें अध्याय में संक्रान्ति निरूपन एवं फलकथन, वीसवं अध्याय में चन्द्रतारा बल कथन, इक्कीसवें अध्याय में उत्पात फल, तेइसवें अध्याय में ग्रहकूट, तेइसवें अध्याय में लग्न बलाबल, चावीसवें अध्याय से बत्तीसवें अध्याय पर्यन्त गर्भाधान से लेकर विवाहादि संस्कारों का विवेचन है, तैतीसवें अध्याय में राजाभिषेक, चौतीसवें अध्याय में अश्वों का विवेचन, पैंतीसवें अध्याय में गजारिष्ट शान्ति, छत्तीसवें अध्याय में ग्रहण शान्ति, सैतीसवें अध्याय में यात्रा मुहूर्त, अठतीसवें अध्याय में गृहप्रवेश, उन्नतालीसवें अध्याय में वास्तुविवेचन, चालीसवें अध्याय में देवप्रतिष्ठा, इकतालीसवें अध्याय में गुणनिरूपण, वयालीसवें अध्याय में दोष-निरूपण, शान्ति विधान, तैतालीसवें में गुणदोषापवाद कथन, चौआलीसवें में वस्त्रपरिधान, पंचतालीसवें में उत्पात शान्ति, छयालीसवें में रोगोत्पत्ति विवेचन और शान्ति विधान मिलते हैं। इस प्रकार छयालीस अध्यायों में ग्रन्थ की समाप्ति हो जाती है। इस ग्रन्थ में प्रयुक्त श्लोक एवं विषय आर्ष हैं तथा स्वयं महर्षि वसिष्ठ द्वारा प्रणीत हैं। इस ग्रन्थ पर अन्य ऋषियों और आचार्यों का प्रभाव नहीं है अपितु प्रायशः सभी आचार्यों ने तथा समकालीन पराशरादि ऋषियों ने भी वसिष्ठऋषि के श्लोकों एवं मतों को अपने-अपने ग्रन्थों में उधृत किया है अतः इस ग्रन्थ की प्राचीनता आष॑त्व स्वयमेव सिद्ध हो जाता है।
