Some Excerpts From the Book A new English-Hindustani dictionary
This is a companion volume to the author's Hindustani and English Dictionary.
It contains more words than are generally found in other works with the addition of many thousand idioms and phrases with their Hindustani equivalents.
Its chief features are:
First. A greater degree of fullness and accuracy than have yet been attained. Second. A considerable number of English phrases and idioms, with
idiomatic Hindustānī translations.
Third-Technical terms in European Arts, Science, and Philosophy rendered for the first time in popular Hindustānī, in addition to the Arabic and Sanskrit terms in present use in Government Colleges and Schools. Fourth. The primary and secondary English meanings with their Hindus
tānī equivalents arranged in logical order.
Fifth. The Hindustani equivalents so arranged that the more commonly used or colloquial phrase comes before the less used or pedantic one. Sixth.-Examples, chiefly colloquial, with idiomatic translations, some times in verse.
Seventh. The examples sometimes consist of English Proverbs, with
idiomatic Hindustani translations and parallel Ñative proverbs when
there are any.
Eighth.-Quotations from standard authors with their metrical renderings
to exemplify and illustrate the use and meaning of words. Ninth-Affinities between Sanskrit, Hindi, Persian, and Arabic words, and their equivalents in Anglo-Saxon, English (with its dialects), and other European languages of the Arian group.
