Rajputs have a unique place in medieval Indian history. On the one hand, on the basis of what Fernal Tod has presented the Rajputs through his heroic stories, there was no other caste in India like them in valor and sacrifice, on the other hand, in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, the ease with which the attackers attacked India. It makes us wonder if we have achieved success. This paradox remains a deadly puzzle. Then after the establishment of the Turkish state in Delhi, for about three and a half years, the Turks, Afghan and Mughal rulers kept trying to gain control over Rajasthan, but they continued to get success. The same Rajputs who completely failed to stop the Tufus from entering India in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, Ghagale succeeded in stopping the expansion of the Delhi Sultanate and villages and the Mughal Empire for three and a half years, this is the second link in the puzzle. Thereafter, from the later sixteenth century, how the Mughal rulers made this opposing force their subsidiary force and how they established a pre-legislative empire on its strength, this is the third link in that puzzle. Our medieval history has not been able to get it in full light even now because of these gullies of the history of Rajputs.

मध्यकालीन भारतीय इतिहास में राजपूतों का विशिष्ट स्थान है। एक ओर जहां फर्नल टॉड ने अपनी वीर गाथाओं के माध्यम से राजपूतों को जो प्रस्तुत किया है, उसके आधार पर भारत में उनके समान वीरता और बलिदान में कोई अन्य जाति नहीं थी, दूसरी ओर ग्यारहवीं और बारहवीं शताब्दी में सहजता के साथ जिस पर हमलावरों ने भारत पर हमला बोल दिया। यह हमें आश्चर्यचकित करता है कि क्या हमने सफलता हासिल की है। यह विरोधाभास एक घातक पहेली बना हुआ है। फिर दिल्ली में तुर्की राज्य की स्थापना के बाद लगभग साढ़े तीन साल तक तुर्क, अफगान और मुगल शासक राजस्थान पर अधिकार करने की कोशिश करते रहे, लेकिन उन्हें सफलता मिलती रही। वही राजपूत जो ग्यारहवीं और बारहवीं शताब्दी में तुफस को भारत में प्रवेश करने से रोकने में पूरी तरह विफल रहे, घागले साढ़े तीन साल तक दिल्ली सल्तनत और गांवों और मुगल साम्राज्य के विस्तार को रोकने में सफल रहे, यह दूसरी कड़ी है पहेली तत्पश्चात् सोलहवीं शताब्दी के उत्तरार्ध से मुगल शासकों ने किस प्रकार इस विरोधी शक्ति को अपनी सहायक शक्ति बना लिया और किस प्रकार उसके बल पर पूर्व-विधायी साम्राज्य की स्थापना की, यह उस पहेली की तीसरी कड़ी है। राजपूतों के इतिहास की इन्हीं गलियों के कारण हमारा मध्यकालीन इतिहास आज भी पूर्ण प्रकाश में नहीं आ पाया है।
