अथ प्रथमोऽध्यायः
नारायणं गमस्कृत्य नरं चैव नरोत्तमम् । देवी सरस्वती चैव ततो जयमुदीरयेत् ॥१ अपति पराशरसूनुः सत्यवतीहृदयनन्दनो व्यास यादम्यकमलगलित समयमपुतं जगत्पिति ॥ २
करोति वाचाल पते गिरिम् । यत्कृपा तमह बच्चे परमानन्दभाध पाराशयः सरोजममलं गीतार्थगन्धोत्कट, नानाख्यानककेसर हरिकथासम्बोधनडोधितम् लोके सज्जनषद् पर्व रहरहः पेपोयमानं मुदा भूयाद्भारपङ्कजं कलिमलप्रध्वंसिनः ॥४ यो गोशतं कनकभृङ्गमयं ददाति विप्राय वेदविदुषे च बहुताय पुण्यां भविष्यकथां शृणुयात्समा पुण्यं समं भवति तस्य च तस्य चैव ॥५
अध्याय १ ब्राह्मपर्व का वर्णन
नारायण, नरोत्तम ( मनुष्यों में श्रेष्ठ तथा वाग्देवी सरस्वती को नमस्कार करके, जय (महाभारत, पुराणादि पवित्र ग्रन्थों के ) आख्यानों का उच्चारण करना चाहिए १। सत्यवती के हृदय को हर्षित करने वाले, पराशर के पुत्र व्यासदेव की जय हो, जिनके मुखारविन्द से निकले हुए अमृत ( रस)ीयों का समस्त संसार पान करता है 21 जिसकी कृपा दृष्टि) मात्र से ही मूक (गूंगा) पण्डित (शास्त्र निष्णात होकर प्रवक्ता वाचाल जाता है और पंगु (लंगड़ा विकृताङ्ग) पर्वत को लांघने योग्य (सामर्थ्य से युक्त) हो जाता है, उस परमानन्द स्वरूप माधव ( श्रीकृष्ण ) की मैं बन्दना करता हूँ || इस लोक (संसार) में कलियुग के पापों को दिनष्ट करने वाला वह महाभारत रूप कमल हम लोगों ( वक्ता श्रोता ) का कल्याण करे जो पराशर नन्दन व्यास के वचनरूपी सरोवर से उत्पन्न हुआ है। यह जय काव्य अति निर्मल है गीता के गंभीर भावों की उत्कृष्ट सुगन्धि से सुवासित और विविध प्रकार के सुन्दर आल्यान-परागों से व्याप्त भगवान् श्रीकृष्ण की ( पावन) कथाओं में विकसित है उस पर अमर बनें सत्पुरुष गूंज गूंजकर उस ( काव्य पराग) का रसास्वादन करते हैं।४। जो व्यक्ति स्वर्ण मण्डित सौगों से मुसज्जित सौ गौओं को (किसी कर्मकाण्डी वेदज्ञ-बहुश्रुत) ब्राह्मण को दान करता है और जो कोई दूसरा व्यक्ति इस दान के स्थान पर ) भविष्यमहापुराण की कथा का आद्योपान्त श्रवण करता है, उन दोनों
