जयति पराशरसूनुः सत्यवतीहृदयनन्दनो व्यासः । यस्यास्यकमलगलितं वाङ्मयममृतं जगत् पिबति ॥
'पराशरके पुत्र तथा सत्यवतीके हृदयको आनन्दित करनेवाले भगवान् व्यासकी जय हो, जिनके मुखकमलसे निःसृत अमृतमयी वाणीका यह सम्पूर्ण विश्व पान करता है।'
पुण्यां भविष्यसुकथां शृणुयात् समग्र पुण्यं समं भवति तस्य च तस्य चैव ॥
'वेदादि शास्त्रोंकि जाननेवाले तथा अनेक विषयोंक मर्मज्ञ विद्वान् ब्राह्मणको स्वर्णजटित सींगोंवाली सैकड़ों गौओंको दान देनेसे जो पुण्य प्राप्त होता है, ठीक उतना ही पुण्य इस भविष्यमहापुराणकी उत्तम कथाओंके श्रवण करनेसे प्राप्त होता है।'
एक समय व्यासजीके शिष्य महर्षि सुमन्तु तथा वसिष्ठ, पराशर, जैमिनि, याज्ञवल्क्य, गौतम, वैशम्पायन, शौनक, अङ्गिरा और भारद्वाजादि महर्षिगण पाण्डववंशमें समुत्पन्न महाबलशाली राजा शतानीककी सभामें गये। राजाने उन ऋषियोंका अर्ध्यादिसे विधिवत् स्वागत सत्कार किया और उन्हें उत्तम आसनोंपर बैठाया तथा भलीभाँति उनका पूजन कर विनयपूर्वक इस प्रकार प्रार्थना की- 'हे महात्माओ! आप लोगों के आगमनसे मेरा जन्म सफल हो गया। आपलोगोंके स्मरणमात्र ही मनुष्य पवित्र हो जाता है, फिर आपलोग मुझे
