Sage Agastya was a Vedic sage. He was the elder brother of Rishi Vashistha. He was born in Kashi, around 3000 BC. Nowadays this place is called Agastyakund. He was one of the Saptarishis. On the request of the gods, he left Kashi and went on a south journey and settled there.

There are many stories about Agastya Rishi in the Puranas, in which his courage and compassion are introduced. In these stories, he is described as a 'dwarf sage' because of his short stature. Small in stature, this sage did great work for the welfare of the entire human race.

जन्म व प्रारम्भिक जीवन

ऋषि अगस्त्य एक वैदिक ऋषि थे। वह ऋषि वशिष्ठ के बड़े भाई थे। उनका जन्म लगभग 3000 वर्ष ईसापूर्व काशी में हुआ। आजकल इस स्थान को अगस्त्यकुंड कहा जाता है। वह सप्तऋषियों में से एक थे। देवगणों के अनुरोध पर वह काशी छोड़कर दक्षिण यात्रा पर चले गये और वहीं बस गये।

पुराणों में अगस्त्य ऋषि के बारे में अनेक कथाएँ हैं, जिनमें उनके साहस और करुणा का परिचय है। इन कथाओं में छोटा कद होने के कारण उन्हें 'बौने ऋषि' के रूप में वर्णित किया गया है। कद में छोटे इस ऋषि ने महान कार्य कर समस्त मानव जाति का कल्याण किया।
