Vratani Yamadharmascha Sarve Sankalpajah Smrita: Om Whatever is wished, there is a resolution at the root of it, yagyas are also possible with determination, rules of fasting and religion are born of all resolutions. Sankalpa is the main thing in the work, so it is worth worshiping for a long time. The activity which is done with a certain determination is called Vrat.

श्रीसत्यनारायण व्रतकथा। | वास्तव में सत्य का क्या स्वरूप है, वही इस कथा के माध्यम से भगवान् श्रीहरि ने अपने भक्तों को समझाया है। | संकल्प-पूर्वक दृढ़ निश्चय के साथ क्रिया विशेष द्वारा जो अनुष्ठान किया जाये, उसे व्रत कहा जाता है, हमारे शास्त्रों में जिन-जिन व्रतों का वर्णन किया गया है वे कभी न कभी किसी ऋषि-महर्षि, अथवा महापुरुष साधक के द्वारा किये ॐ गये अनुष्ठान ही हैं। उनसे सम्बन्धित कथाओं में बताया गया है कि सर्वप्रथम इस व्रत को किसने किया तथा उसे किस अभीष्ट फल की प्राप्ति हुई। इसलिये वर्तमान समय में भी वह व्रत करणीय है। व्रतोपवास का न केवल दृष्ट फल ही है। अपितु इससे कर्ता का शुभ अदृष्ट फल भी बनता है, दृढ़ निश्चय का संस्कृत में संकल्प नाम दिया गया है। किसी भी व्रत का अनुष्ठान करने अथवा नियम लेने के लिये दृढ़ इच्छा शक्ति की आवश्यकता होती है। हमारे यहाँ इसीलिये | किसी भी शुभ कार्य को प्रारंभ करते समय संकल्प का विधान बनाया गया है। मनु महाराज का कथन है
संकल्पमूलः कामो वै यज्ञाः संकल्पसम्भवाः । व्रतानि यमधर्माश्च सर्वे संकल्पजाः स्मृताः ॥ जो भी कामना की जाती है, उसके मूल में एक संकल्प रहता है यज्ञ भी संकल्प से संभव होते हैं, व्रत नियम और धर्म सभी संकल्प जनित होते हैं। संकल्प ही कार्य में प्रधान होता है इसलिये दीर्घकाल तक उपासना करने योग्य | कार्यकलाप को जो एक निश्चित संकल्प के साथ किया जाये उसे व्रत कहा गया है।
कुछ साधक अपने इष्ट देव की तिथि को उपवास, भजन, एवं पूजन का विशेष व्रत रखते हैं।
