Some Excerpts From the Book Matsya Purana
In the Matsya Purana Purana, along with the main story of the Matsya avatar of Lord Shri Hari, many pilgrimages, fasts, sacrifices, donations etc. have been described in detail. In this, special light has also been laid on the water deluge, the dialogue of Matsya and Manu, Rajdharma, pilgrimage, charity Mahatmya, Prayag Mahatmya, Kashi Mahatmya, Narmada Mahatmya, idol making greatness and glory of Tridevs etc. This Purana with fourteen thousand verses is also a one. It is an ancient book.
The main Upapuranas are, Sanatkumar, Narasimha, Nardiya, Shiva, Durvasa, Kapil, Manav Shraushanal, Varuna, Kalika, Samba, Nandi, Sora, Parashara, Shraditya, Maheshwar, Devi Bhagwat and Vasistha. And the future is mentioned in the Upa Purana, with the names of Naradiya, Shiva, Aditya and Vasistha not mentioned. In most of these Upapuranas, the above Panchalakshanas of the Puranas have not been followed. Efforts have been made to bring so many miracles in the description style, from which it becomes clear that they are very modern. This is the reason why his discussion has not come anywhere in most of the Mahapuranas.
The above eighteen Mahapuranas have also been divided into classes. It has been discussed in Kedarkhand of Skanda Purana that there are ten Shaivas, four Brahmanas, two Shakas and two Vaishnavas among the eighteen Mahapuranas. In this regard, it has been written in the Skanda Purana, under the section of Shiva Rahasya, that Shaiva, Bhavishya, Markandeya, Lain, Varaha, Skanda, Matsya, Kaurma, Vamana and Brahmanda are the ten Puranas of Shaiva. The number of all these verses is 3 lakh. Vaishnava (Vishnu), Bhagavata, Nardiya and Garuda are the four Vaishna, in which the glory of Lord Vishnu is described. Brahma and Gadma - these two are the components of Brahma. The Agni Purana is full of fire and the Brahmavarta Purana is full of the glory of the Sun. Most of the four Vaishnu Puranas have propounded the similarity of Mahadev and Vishnu. In some places, the greatness of Vishnu has been described more than Mahadev. In the Brahma Purana, equating Brahma Vishnu Mahesh has been proved as the superior of Brahma and the Sun as universal. Similarly, in the Shaiva Puranas, Shiva is considered to be the most powerful of all the gods. In the Prakrit Matsva Mahapuran, the Matsya avatar of Mawan Vishnu has been described, but there is a detailed description of the various incarnations and actions of Mahadev.

संपूर्ण मत्स्य पुराण पुस्तक के कुछ अंश
मत्स्य पुराण पुराण में भगवान श्रीहरि के मत्स्य अवतार की मुख्य कथा के साथ अनेक तीर्थ, व्रत, यज्ञ, दान आदि का विस्तृत वर्णन किया गया है। इसमें जल प्रलय, मत्स्य व मनु के संवाद, राजधर्म, तीर्थयात्रा, दान महात्म्य, प्रयाग महात्म्य, काशी महात्म्य, नर्मदा महात्म्य, मूर्ति निर्माण माहात्म्य एवं त्रिदेवों की महिमा आदि पर भी विशेष प्रकाश डाला गया है।चौदह हजार श्लोकों वाला यह पुराण भी एक प्राचीन ग्रंथ है।
इनमें प्रमुख उपपुराण यह है, सनत्कुमार, नरसिंह, नारदीय, शिव, दुर्वासा, कपिल, मानव श्रौशनल, वरुण, कालिका, साम्ब, नन्दी, सोर, पराशर, श्रादित्य, महेश्वर, देवी भागवत और वसिष्ठ स्कन्द पुराण के रेवाखण्ड शिवधर्म में ब्रह्माण्ड, कूर्म और भविष्य को उपपुराण बतलाया गया है, साथ ही नारदीय, शिव, आदित्य और वसिष्ठ का नामोल्लेख नहीं किया गया है। इन उपपुराणों में से अधि कांश में पुराणों के उक्त पंचलक्षणों का पालन नहीं किया गया है। वर्णना शैली में इतनी अधिक चमत्कृति लाने की चेष्टा की गई है जिसे देखने से यह स्पष्ट ज्ञात हो जाता है कि वे बहुत आधुनिक है। यही कारण है कि उनकी चर्चा अधिकांश महापुराणों में कहीं नहीं आई है।
उक्त अठारह महापुराणों को बर्गों में भी विभक्त किया गया है। स्कान्दपुराण के केदारखण्ड में यह चर्चा आयी है कि अठारहों महापुराणों में दस शैव, चार ब्राह्म, दो शाक और दो वैष्णव है। इस सम्बन्ध में शिव रहस्य खण्डान्तर्गत सम्भवकाण्ड में स्कन्द पुराण में ही लिखा गया है कि शैव, भविष्य, मार्कण्डेय, लैन, वाराह, स्कान्द, मात्स्य, कौर्म, वामन और ब्रह्माण्ड ये दस पुराण शैव है। इन सब की श्लोक संख्या ३ लाख है। वैष्णव (विष्णु), भागवत, नारदीय और गारुड ये चार वैष्ण है, इनमें भगवान विष्णु की महिमा वर्णित है। ब्राह्म और गद्म—ये दो ब्रह्मा के पुराग है। अग्नि पुराणअग्नि की और ब्रह्मवर्त पुराण सूर्य की महिमा से पूर्ण है। चारों वैष्णु पुराणों में अधिकतर महादेव और विष्णु की समानता प्रतिपादित की गयी है। कहीं-कहीं पर महादेव से अधिक विष्णु का माहात्म्य वर्णन किया गया है। ब्राह्म पुराण में ब्रह्मा विष्णु महेश का साम्य प्रतिपादित करते हुए भा ब्रह्मा की श्रेष्ठ और सूर्य को विश्वात्मक सिद्ध किया गया है। इसी प्रकार शैव पुराणों में शिव को सभी देवताओंों में अधिक शक्तिशाली माना गया है। प्रकृत मत्स्व महापुराण में मवान् विष्णु के मत्स्यावतार काही वर्गान किया गया है पर महादेव के विविध अवतारी एवं कार्यों का इसमें विशद वर्णन है।
