Etsing was a Chinese traveler and Buddhist monk who came to India in 61-95 AD. He came to India by sea via Sumatra in 65 AD and stayed in 'Nalanda University for 10 years. He read the texts of Sanskrit and Buddhism from the famous Acharyas there.
Etsing (Eich-Chie) was the last of the three major Chinese travelers to India. It was born in 735 in Sun-Young during the reign of Tai-Tsung. In the temple located on Tai Mount, he received his education from the age of seven years only. After the death of Shan-yu, it started studying Buddhist scriptures, excluding worldly subjects. At the age of 14, it got pravajya and at the age of 14 it resolved to undertake the Bharat Yatra which was completed only after 20 years. This led to the study of Vinayasutra - under his supervision and he went east to study the two Asanga scriptures related to the Abhidharmapitaka. Then reached the western capital Si-un-Fuyang-on Shen Si. He made a deep study of the Vasubandhakrit 'Abhidharmakosh' and the Dharmapalaarika 'Vidya-mere-Siddhika'. Perhaps impressed with the honor and fame of Hyeon-tsang in Chen-un, he made a complete resolution of his Bharat Yatra which he himself described.
