कुरुक्षेत्र महाभारत पर आधारित दिनकर की महाकाव्य कविता है।कुरक्षेत्र' की रचना भगवान व्यास के मनुकरण पर नहीं हुई है मौरन महाभारत को दुहराना ही मेरा उद्देश्य था। मुझे जो कुछ कहना था, वह युधिष्ठिर भोर भीष्म का प्रसंग उठाये बिना भी कहा जा सकता था, किंतु, तब यह रचना, घायद, प्रबन्ध के रूप में नहीं उतरकर बनकर रह गयी होती तो भी, यह सच है कि इसे प्रबन्ध के रूप में लाने की मेरी कोई निश्चित योजना नहीं थी। बात यों हुई कि पहले मुझे शो के निर्वेद ने धारूपित किया और 'कलिंग विजय' नामक कविता लिखते लिखते मुझे ऐसा लगा, मानो, युद्ध की समस्या मनुष्य की सारी समस्यामों की जड़ हो। इसी क्रम में द्वापर की मोर देखते हुए मैंने मुधिष्ठिर को देसा, जो 'विजय', इस छोटे से शब्द को कुरुक्षेत्र में बिछी हुई साक्षों से तोल रहे थे किन्तु यहाँ भीष्म के धर्म कपन मे प्रश्न का दूसरा पक्ष भी विद्यमान या भात्मा का संग्राम मात्मा से और देह का संग्राम देह से जीता जाता है। यह कथा युद्धान्त की है। युद्ध के भारम्भ में स्वयं भगवान ने अर्जुन से जो कुछ कहा था, उसका साराय भी धन्याय के विरोध में सपस्या के प्रदर्शन का निवारण ही था।
मृद्ध निन्दित मौर क्रूर कर्म है; किन्तु उसका दायित्व किस पर होना चाहिए ? उस पर, जो धनीतियों का जाल बिछाकर प्रतिकार को धामंत्रण देता है ? या उस पर जो जात को छिन्न-भिन्न कर देने के लिए धातुर है ? पाण्डवों को निर्वासित करके एक प्रकार की प्रांति की रचना तो दुर्योधन ने भी की थी; तो नया युधिष्ठिर महाराज को इस घांति का भंग नहीं करना चाहिए था ?
