मटमैला दिन था। बोरी के टुकडे पर बैठी पूरा मटर छोल रही थी। उँगलिया म पकडी हुई फ्ली के मुह का खोलकर जब उस ने दाना को मुट्ठी में सरकाना चाहा, तो एक सफेद कीडा उस के अँगूठे पर लग गया।
जैसे एकाएक कीचड भरे गड्ढे में पाव जा पडन पर एक सिहरन-सी हो उठती है, वैसी ही सिहरन पूरो के सारे शरीर मे दौड गयी हाथ झटकाकर उस न कीडे को परे फेंक दिया और अपने हाथो का अपने घुटनो म भीच लिया।
पूरो के सामने मटर की फलिया, निकाले हुए दाने और खाली छिलवे बिखरे पढे रहे। उस ने जोड़े हुए पुटनो के बीच म से दोनों हाथ निकालकर अपन कलेजे को थाम लिया। उसे लगा, मानो सिर से पाँव तक उस का शरीर मटर की उस फली की भाति हो जिसके भीतर मटर ने स्वच्छ दानो के स्थान पर कोई गा कीडा पल रहा है।
