धम्मपद की अत्युत्कृष्ट मान्यता- यद्यपि कहने के लिये तो संग्रहकारों ने आकार की दृष्टि से धम्मपद का संग्रह खुद्दकनिकाय के अन्तर्गत लघु ग्रन्थों में किया है, परन्तु (आकारदृष्ट्या छोटा होने पर भी) ( प्रत्येक बौद्ध के हृदय में इसके प्रति अत्यधिक पूजनीय भाव है; क्योंकि इसमें बौद्ध धर्म के सभी सिद्धान्तों का समावेश मिलता है। चार आर्यसत्य एवं आर्य अष्टाङ्गिक मार्ग के साथ साथ विविध सदाचारों के पालन का भी दृढता से भगवान् का आदेश है। इसका समीचनतया अध्ययन करने पर हम बौद्ध धर्म की समस्त रूपरेखा हृदयङ्गम कर सकते हैं।

हमारा यह दृढ विश्वास है कि वर्तमान भौतिकवादी काल में भगवान् के ये बहुजन कल्याणकारी वचन प्रत्येक पुरुष के लिये, भले ही वह पुरुष किसी भी देश का वासी हो, किसी भी जाति का हो, किसी भी आयु का हो, सभी के लिये अधिक से अधिक कल्याणकर हो सकते हैं।

आज से प्रायः २२०० वर्ष पूर्व सम्राट् अशोक ने इस ग्रन्थ के केवल प्रारम्भिक अंश का ही विद्वानों से श्रद्धापूर्वक श्रवण किया था, उसी पर आचरण के प्रभाव प्रताप से अपने समय में उसने इतने लोकोपकारी कार्य किये एवं आदर्श शासन किया कि उसका नाम इतिहास के पृष्ठों पर आज भी स्वर्णाक्षरों में अङ्कित है।

अतएव इस ग्रन्थ का बौद्धों के हृदय में वही आदर, श्रद्धा तथा पूजा भाव है जो किसी हिन्दू का वेद या गीता के प्रति तथा किसी ईसा मतावलम्बी का बाइबिल के प्रति या किसी पारसी का अवेस्ता के प्रति होता है। इस तरह हम कह सकते हैं कि विद्वानों में इस धम्मपद ग्रन्थ का साहित्यिक एवं धार्मिक-दोनों ही स्तरों पर समान महत्त्व माना गया है। ऐसे ग्रन्थ संसार में अङ्गुलिगणनीय ही हैं।

The life introduction, the differences of the then Sanghanikas, the Acharya tradition of Buddhists, the religious tendencies of Buddhist scholars and Buddhist religious propagators, all these topics are described in detail.

Along with this, in this a detailed history-details of the then kings of Lankadweep (from King Vijay to King Mahasen), description of wars from time to time in Lankadweep and many Mahaviharas, Chaitya Stupa Aaram, built by different kings for the residence of Buddhist monks. The sequential description of etc. is also described as per the context. The specialty of this book is considered to be due to such a detailed description.

पालिभाषा में लिखित इस महावंस ग्रन्थ का लङ्काद्वीपीय इतिहास के अतिरिक्त भारतीय इतिहास की दृष्टि से भी अत्यधिक महत्त्व है। इसमें हमें बुद्धपूर्व के चार सौ वर्ष, बुद्धकालीन एक सौ वर्ष तथा बुद्ध-परकालीन प्रायः चार सौ वर्ष का इतिहास बहुत विस्तार से मिलता है। इसके आधार पर हम तत्कालीन सामाजिक क्रियाकलापों की बहुविध सामग्री एवं जानकारी पा लेते हैं। उस समय के धार्मिक आचार-विचार, राजनीतिक परिवर्तन, कृषि व्यापार एवं उद्योग की अभ्युन्नति, सामाजिक शिक्षा में प्रगति नारी का धार्मिक (आध्यात्मिक) एवं F सामाजिक विकास या तत्कालीन भारतीय समाज के रहन-सहन के विषय में हम जो कुछ भी गवेषणा करना चाहें वह सूक्ष्मेक्षिकया अनुशीलन करने पर इसमें अवश्य मिलेगा ।

इसके साथ ही इसमें लङ्काद्वीप के तत्कालीन राजाओं का (राजा विजय से राजा महासेन तक) क्रमपूर्वक विस्तृत इतिहास-विवरण, लङ्काद्वीप में समय-समय पर हुए युद्धों का वर्णन एवं बौद्ध भिक्षुओं के आवासहेतु वहाँ के विभिन्न राजाओं द्वारा निर्मापित अनेक महाविहार, चैत्य स्तूप आराम आदि का क्रमिक वर्णन भी यथाप्रसङ्ग वर्णित हैं । ऐसा विस्तृत वर्णन करने से ही इस ग्रन्थ की विशेषता मानी गयी है ।

Sukvi-Samiksha has been prepared with the aim of presenting a critical introduction of the ancient and ancient major poets of Hindi. The 'Adi period' of Hindi literature, which is also called Apabhramsha period, is not inferior in terms of literary prosperity, but the expression of that period is completely different from the later period, so we have not reviewed any poet of that period in this collection. The expression of Hindi began to flourish from the Bhakti period and gradually it became refined from the point of view of language. In the Bhakti period, among the poets of the Nirguna, Saguna and Premmargi branches, capable artists like Kabir, Sur, Tulsi, Jayasi, Meerabai were born, as a result of which this period became famous in Hindi literature by the name of Golden Age. We have given a detailed place to all the poets of this period in 'Sukvi-Samiksha'.

The history of Ritikaal after Bhaktikal- has a place in the texts. The word Riti gives an understanding of the poets, but not all the poets of this period were poetic scholars of the Acharya category. In fact, in the eyes of most of the poets, the number of poets did not go beyond the makeup and hero-heroine distinction, in this period more than a hundred good poets were born, but we have selected only representative poets among them. Keshav, Dev and Bhushan can be called representative poets of different styles of this period. There is no other poet who can equate Keshav in displaying Acharyatva. Mahakavi Dev has the best place among the customary poets. The place of Bhushan is on the sly because of the flow of anti-makeer poetry. Bhushan is revered in Hindi literature as an incarnation of Veer Rasa. Thus, out of the vast group of ancient poets, we have selected only eight poets.

In the selection of the ancient poets, special attention has been given to personality and tendencies. No other poet of that era can represent the Bharatendu era as well as Bharatendu Harishchandra himself. In the Dwivedi era, 'Hariudh' and Maithilisharan Gut are representative poets in all respects. The review of 'Prasad', 'Nirala', 'Pant' and Mahadevi, representative of Chhayavadi era, has been written keeping in view their gradual development. Both Makhanlal and 'Dinkar' are capable poets of national sentiments. In this way the criticism of these nine poets can be helpful in presenting a complete picture of the modern poetry of Hindi.

हिन्दी के प्राचीन तथा अर्वाचीन प्रमुख कवियों का आलोचनात्मक परिचय प्रस्तुत करने के उद्देश्य से सुकवि-समीक्षा का प्रणयन किया गया है। हिन्दी साहित्य का 'आदि काल' जिसे अपभ्रंश काल भी कहते हैं, साहित्यिक समृद्धि की दृष्टि से हीन नहीं है किन्तु उस काल की अभिव्यंजना परवर्ती काल से सर्वथा भिन्न है, अतः हमने इस संग्रह में उस काल के किसी कवि की समीक्षा नहीं की है। हिन्दी का अभिव्यंजना सौष्ठव भक्तिकाल से निखरना प्रारम्भ हुआ और शनैः शनैः भाषा की दृष्टि से वह परिनिष्ठित होता गया। भक्तिकाल में निर्गुण, सगुण और प्रेममार्गी शाखा के कवियों में कबीर, सूर, तुलसी, जायसी, मीराबाई जैसे समर्थ कलाकार उत्पन्न हुए, फलतः यह काल हिन्दी साहित्य में स्वर्णकाल के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हो गया। हमने 'सुकवि-समीक्षा' में इस काल के सभी प्रति निधि कवियों को विस्तारपूर्वक स्थान दिया है।

भक्तिकाल के बाद रीतिकाल का इतिहास- ग्रंथों में स्थान है। रीति शब्द से काव्यांगों का बोध होता है किन्तु इस काल के सभी कवि आचार्य कोटि के काव्य-शास्त्री नहीं थे । यथार्थं में अधिकांश कवियों की दृष्टि शृंगार रस और नायक-नायिका भेद से आगे नहीं गई संख्या की दृष्टि से तो इस काल में शताधिक अच्छे कवि उत्पन्न हुए किन्तु उनमें से प्रतिनिधि कवियों का ही हमने चयन किया है। केशव, देव और भूषण इस काल की विविध शैलियों के प्रतिनिधि कवि कहे जा सकते हैं। आचार्यत्व का प्रदर्शन करने में केशव की समता करने वाला कोई दूसरा कवि नहीं है। रीतिबद्ध कवियों में महाकवि देव का सर्वश्रेष्ठ स्थान है। भूषण का स्थान शृंगार विरोधी काव्यधारा प्रवाहित करने के कारण मूर्धन्य पर है। वीर रस के अवतार के रूप में भूषण हिन्दी साहित्य में पूजित हैं। इस प्रकार प्राचीन कवियों के विशाल समूह में से हमने केवल आठ कवियों का चयन किया है।

अर्वाचीन कवियों के चयन में व्यक्तित्व एवं प्रवृत्तिगत वैशिष्ट्य का विशेष ध्यान रखा गया है। भारतेन्दु युग का प्रतिनिधित्व स्वयं भारतेन्दु हरिश्चन्द्र जितना अच्छा करते हैं उतना उस युग का अन्य कोई कवि नहीं कर सकता। द्विवेदी युग में 'हरिऔध' और मैथिलीशरण गुत ही सब दृष्टियों से प्रतिनिधि कवि हैं। छायावादी युग के प्रतिनिधि 'प्रसाद', 'निराला', 'पन्त' और महादेवी की समीक्षा उनके क्रमिक विकास को दृष्टि में रख कर लिखी गई है। माखनलाल और 'दिनकर' दोनों ही राष्ट्रीय भावनाओं के गायक समर्थ कवि हैं। इस प्रकार इन नौ कवियों की आलोचना हिन्दी की आधुनिक काव्यधारा का सम्पूर्ण चित्र प्रस्तुत करने में सहायक हो सकती है।
